Jordanians protest to ban on the import of Israeli agricultural products

(PTI): Jordanian police attack demonstrators who demand a ban on the import of Israeli agricultural products which they say supports Jewish settlements.

The demonstrators held a sit-in on Sunday in front of the Agricultural Ministry to protest the import of Israeli vegetables and fruits. Jordanians say buying Israeli produce helps Jewish settlers in the occupied territories.

The government, however, insists that the 3,600 tons of agricultural produce it annually imports from Israel, are not from Jewish settlements.

According to a report, police tried to forcibly disperse the protesters saying the participants did not obtain a permit to hold a sit-in.

According to eyewitnesses, a number of trade unionists and politicians were ‘beaten’ as security forces wielded batons to end the sit-in.

During the course of events two men were arrested, but six others joined them in the police van in a show of solidarity. Two people were also injured.
