The Philippines is Asia’s most popular destination

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

(TDN): The Philippines was named the ‘Most Popular Destination in Asia’, after a public vote and a strict evaluation process undertaken by professional jurors from the Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration and VNU Exhibitions Europe, at the recent World Travel Fair (WTF) 2009.

“Our country receiving the highest laurel in Asia’s leading source fair in China is a notable milestone in the industry’s optimism in sustaining the momentum generated from efforts to reach this important market segment,” said Ace Durano, Secretary of Tourism.

The tourism chief added, “The Philippines is one of the fastest growing destinations in China’s outbound travel industry, recording a 74% month-on-month growth rate in visa issuances for February of this year.  We are also the nearest tropical beach country for the Chinese, as Manila is only 2 hours away from Guangzhou, while Cebu is only 3 hours away from Shanghai.”

Durano likewise attributed the win to the country’s competitive tour pricing, the remarkable progress of the transportation sector and the Filipino’s friendliness and hospitality.

Dubbed as the ‘Outbound Travel Industry’s Leading Source Fair in Asia,  the WTF receives thousands of travel buyers from China, Asia and the rest of the world, who come to hold exchanges with more than 500 exhibitors from 62 countries, held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre.

“The Chinese travellers rank our country’s beaches and heritage sites high, as proven by the various recognitions they have awarded to our tourist spots,” Durano said further.

Beach holidays rank 79% among the top leisure activities undertaken by the Chinese, according to an outbound travel study in China, while the International Visitor Survey conducted by the DOT reported that foreign visitors rank the country highest for visitor satisfaction in terms of Filipino hospitality.

Due to its strong partnership with a consortium of travel agents, the DOT has urged the transportation sector to open direct chartered flights and daily regular flights to Cebu and Manila.  These developments have reflected a 61% increase in number of chartered flights operated in 2008 compared to last year.

Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque, Jr. was enthusiastic to point out that the country has always garnered positive feedback from Asian tourists, “The Philippines has managed to secure, among others, the Best Leisure Destination in the last year’s WTF, for Boracay; the Top 10 Island Getaways for Chinese Summer Travel, for Bohol; the only Asian entry in the list of premier destinations in the acclaimed World Traveller Magazine; and Top 10 Most Searched Destination among Shanghai online users.”

Jarque was referring to Baidu, the biggest search engine in China capturing 68% of the Chinese online market (Google a distant second with 20% market share), which listed the Philippines in the Top 10 most searched travel destination among Shanghai online users from its latest report.

Meanwhile, Arlene Alipio, head of DOT Team China, noted that the flourishing outbound travel of China has been propitious to the Philippines as well, “Recent statistics from the China National Tourism Administration show that the number of Chinese travellers reached 34.4 million in the first nine months of this year, up by 14.8 percent year-on-year.  In September alone, about 3.7 million Chinese people travelled overseas, an increase of 9 percent year-on-year.“

Shanghai-based Philippine Tourism Attache to China, Gerry Panga, shared, “The country’s continued and consolidated efforts in promoting a wide array of travel opportunities to its Asian neighbours have indeed resulted to our strong market performance despite the global crunch.”

RP posted a growth rate of 58.5% in 2008 in terms of visa issuances for travel to the Philippines from Eastern China plus Sichuan and Chongqing.  Current growth rate stands at 20% from January to March 2009, making the Philippines one of the fastest growing outbound destinations for Chinese tourists.

China can lead tourism’s support of the G20 programme

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

(TDN): Tourism and travel can support the G20 stimulation programmes. It creates jobs, boosts development and promotes open, two way trade. It can also play a part in the transformation towards a new Green Economy. China’s vibrant tourism sector can become a model for other nations and a world leader.

Addressing the Boao Forum for Asia on “Tourism and the Financial Crisis” UNWTO Assistant Secretary-General Geoffrey Lipman explained that tourism – business and leisure travel – can play a role in the G20 led economic recovery. “Tourism is a service industry and that means people – not only in the sector but throughout the value chain. In areas such as manufacturing for transport, construction for infrastructure and agriculture for food.” He added “It’s also a development lifeline – for the poorest countries; tourism is a major export. China, which has emerged as a world leader in tourism, is on course to becoming the top domestic, inbound and outbound market in the world and thus has a vital role to play.”

The Chairman of China’s National Tourism Administration (CNTA), Shao Qiwei affirmed that China’s actions to counter the financial crisis would help global tourism. “Policies from both central government and local governments to boost consumption will sustain domestic and outbound tourism.” He added that “reviving global tourism needed efforts from all countries and regions. China would contribute its part, with other nations, to help the industry recover.”

UNWTO is also calling for recognition of the potential for the sector to contribute to the long-term transformation to a Green Economy, based on reduced carbon outputs, clean energy and new technologies. Mr. Lipman said that “we account for 5% of carbon emissions and we have to fix that in line with new norms, which will be developed at the UNFCCC in Copenhagen at the end of this year – in a timely, globally meaningful and appropriately differentiated way. So we need smart tourism that links wise growth with clear carbon reduction. We must adapt, mitigate and use technology as never before. And we must secure financing for the poorest countries to stay in the game.”

The meeting took place on Hainan Island, which is being developed as an international Tourism Island by China, with the support of UNWTO.

U.S. travel and tourism exports reach historic heights in 2008

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

(TDN): International visitors spent a record-breaking $142.1 billion on travel to, and tourism-related activities within, the United States in 2008, according to preliminary statistics released by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The total represented an increase of more than 16 percent from the previous record set in 2007.
- Travel Receipts: Purchases of travel and tourism-related goods and services by international visitors traveling in the United States totaled $110.5 billion for the year, an increase of 14 percent over 2007. These goods and services include food, lodging, recreation, gifts, entertainment, local transportation in the United States, and other items incidental to foreign travel.
- Passenger Fare Receipts: Fares received by U.S. carriers (and U.S. vessel operators) from international visitors increased nearly 24 percent over 2007 receipts to $31.6 billion for the year.

U.S. travel and tourism exports during the opening months of 2008 were strong enough to offset a dramatic downturn in the closing months, a decline of nearly 10 percent in the fourth quarter alone. However, preliminary 2009 data are markedly below 2008, suggesting a significant downturn is possible for this year.

2008 U.S. Travel and tourism trade highlights:

* Travel and tourism exports accounted for eight percent of all U.S. exports and 26% of services exports, positioning travel and tourism as the United States’ single largest services export.
* The growth of U.S. travel and tourism exports outpaced the growth of imports by more than 2:1 (16.2% and 7.4%, respectively).
* The travel and tourism trade surplus accounts for a little more than 21% of the total U.S. services sector surplus.
* In dollar terms, the strongest gains in international visitor spending came from the United Kingdom (up $2.5 billion), Canada (up $2.5 billion), Germany (up $1.3 billion), France (up $1.2 billion), and Italy (up $1.0 billion).
* In percentage terms, U.S. travel and tourism-related exports showed the strongest growth for Italy (up 38%), France (up 38%), Argentina (up 32%), Netherlands (up 32%), and China (up 31%).
* Of all countries and regions reported in 2008, Argentina, Hong Kong, Japan, South Africa, and Taiwan were the only countries that failed to produce record levels of visitor spending in the United States.
* The top five international markets for U.S. travel and tourism exports include Canada ($18.7 billion), United Kingdom ($17.5 billion), Japan ($15.1 billion), and Germany ($6.5 billion).
