First Airbus A380 passenger flight to Antarctica
January 2nd, 2010(TDN): A Qantas Airbus A380 “superjumbo” - designated as flight QF 2903 - departs Melbourne, bound for Antarctica. As well as being the only sightseeing flight over Antarctica this New Year’s Eve, the aircraft will also be the first commercial flight by an A380 over the south polar region. And not only will the 450 passengers and crew on board be among the first in the world to experience the first sunlight of the new year and the new decade - as occupants of the first commercial A380 over Antarctica, they will also become aviation pioneers.

Abu Dhabi to launch low-cost airline in 2010
January 2nd, 2010(TDN): A United Arab Emirates-based investment company will start a low-cost airline from Abu Dhabi next year, al Khaleej reported, citing industry sources it didn’t identify. The carrier started hiring and plans to operate short- and mid-range flights to regional cities, the newspaper said, without identifying the name of the investment company.

British Airways and Malaga City make plans for a joint future
January 1st, 2010(TDN): British Airways online and direct sales manager, Keith Chuter, and Francisco De La Torre, the Mayor of Malaga Town Hall, put pen to paper this month, signing a letter of intent, making official their plans to further promote Malaga City in the British market. The letter lays the foundations of a two year agreement that will see British Airways use its online channels, to highlight the many flights available to Malaga from the UK, and further increase tourism to the city.

80% of the Romanian tourists spent their holiday inbound in 2009
December 31st, 2009(TDN): According to a survey carried out by Insomar during summer season, the number of Romanian tourists going on holidays this year increased by 5% compared to 2008. The study was performed on a sample of 2,500 individuals. Approximately 40% of the tourists spending their holiday in Romania stated that they made the choice attracted by convenient tariffs in the resorts, while 11% of the interviewed persons counted on the quality of services.

Tune Hotels.com has partnered Thailand’s Evolution Capital
December 30th, 2009(TDN): Tune Hotels.com has partnered Thailand’s Evolution Capital pcl to set up 44 budget hotels across Asia under a franchise deal. Evolution Capital, which is listed on the Stock Exchange of Thailand, will invest US$200 million (RM688 million) and run the hotels using the Tune Hotels.com brand name. It plans to set up hotels in Thailand, China, Bangladesh, the Philippines and Indonesia.

Detroit airliner incident ‘was failed bomb attack’
December 29th, 2009(TDN): An incident on an airliner arriving in the US city of Detroit from Amsterdam in the Netherlands was a failed bomb attack, senior US officials say. Sources say a man burnt his leg trying to ignite explosives on the jet, which had 278 passengers and 11 crew aboard, but nobody else was seriously hurt. In custody, the Nigerian suspect said he had been acting on behalf of al-Qaeda, a police source said.

Continental Airlines launches new service to Fiji
December 28th, 2009(TDN): Continental Airlines begins today new nonstop service from Honolulu and its Guam hub to Nadi, Fiji. “Nadi is a popular vacation spot that attracts visitors from around the world and fits well with our portfolio of destinations throughout the Pacific,” said Jim Compton, Continental’s executive vice president of marketing. “We’ve scheduled the Fiji flights to conveniently connect with Continental’s flights from the U.S. mainland, Japan and Micronesia.”
